I filled up my gas yesterday afternoon - $3.18/gallon

You missed, perhaps, that rather large storm that came through and blew out the gas/oil pipelines that feed into the northeast. It's had a major effect on gasoline prices everywhere, but since your supplies are greatly reduced, you're facing the brunt of it. Thus, $3+ gasoline.

ahem, may I just drop a word about the local gas price in Germany:
yesterday it was around 1.44€ per liter.. hmmmmm... that's at the current exchange rate roundabout US$1.8037 per liter and (i think a gallon is something like 3.785 liters)... equals somewhat US$6.83/gallon..
anymore concerns?? ;-)

yeah, and the fact that LA doesn't have mass transit systems like in europe..your gas is more expensive..BUT WE DEPEND ON CHEAP GAS MORE...i wish gas cost $6.83 a gallon here, watch everyone ditch their cars:)
